SELLERS

HAWKINS

SELLERS

No I don't. I understand perfectly well what you mean, but I don't like to be spoken to like that; for I'll swear I've never heard the woman's name before.

(Exit SELLERS with MRS. H.)

HAWKINS

Ha! Ha! Ha! Well Daniel, you take care of the children while I go with the Colonel and see how the land lies. Laws, what a man he is, one day he's rolling in luxury and then again you couldn't ask a blessing over his table without seeming to be sarcastic.

(Exit HAWKINS.)

UNCLE DANIEL

Now den Chil'len, you mind and just behave you sef'. You's in a strange country now and if you should go out'en dis he'ah camp dey's Lyons and Elephants and different kinds of debbils roun' he'ah dat would take and snake the head off'n you fo' you could spread you'sef and holler—

(Noise of Steamboat whistle. DANIEL jumps back.)
