LAURA

I don't know, I don't know. But I don't want you to—to—I can't have you go away, and—

CLAY

Laura, I have thought of it for some time, and it will almost kill me to go away from you.

LAURA

Father has plenty, he loves you with all his heart.] Why seek your fortune among strangers?

CLAY

It isn't that. I'm seeking life. I cannot tear you out of my heart while you are still before my eyes. [Every day that I remain here will make it harder for me.] I wanted to make one more attempt in this last interview.

LAURA

Oh! I do not know what to do, for I do not know my own heart. I dare not say the word for fear—

(After reflection.)

Clay!

CLAY

Yes Laura!

LAURA

Give me time. Give me time to learn my own heart—then you shall know.

CLAY

All the time you wish Laura!

LAURA

You shall go away as you have said. I'll give you an answer, but we'll set no date. Let me have time to consider, then you shall know. Please look cheerful, Clay. I don't want to give you pain and I'm trying not to.
