COL. SELBY
(Coldly.)

Well?

LAURA
(In a low tone.)

We choose not to be separated.

COL. SELBY

We cannot so choose at this moment. The war has left me a ruined man. I must have time to get on my feet again—to gather up the wreck of what remains and so make a home.

LAURA
(Softening.)

A home! Oh, George, a very poor home will do for me, if you are there.

COL. SELBY

Possibly—for a time. You look at the present, I at the future.

LAURA

The future! Ah, me, how dark it is!

(Pause.)

George, though I may never see you again, you must not come to the house any more. This has been urged— commanded—

COL. SELBY

Commanded, by whom?

LAURA

All who have an authority. My Brother Clay for one.

COL. SELBY
(With a slight start.)

Is he here?
