MRS. HAWKINS

O, Clay is come.

(MR. & MRS. H rush to meet him.)

HAWKINS

Why, Clay! Clay!

(Shakes hands & kisses MRS. H then advances
to Laura who holds back shyly.)

CLAY

Laura, have you no welcome for me?

LAURA
(Giving her cheek to kiss.)

Yes! a thousand welcomes, Clay. Although I know I've torn your faithful heart, there is that in your eyes which tells me you do not hate me.

CLAY

My Darling Sister, you will never see that day!

LAURA

I am so grateful.

CLAY
(Turning to MRS. HAWKINS.)

Well, Mother, I [received] your letter and I respond in the words of the old song, "I give thee all I can, I can no more, though poor the offering be."

(Hands MRS. H a package.)

MRS. HAWKINS
(Opening package discovers bank bills.)

O, Clay.

(Kisses him.)

You good soul.

(Kisses.)

Two hundred dollars.

(Kisses.)

It saves the whole household from suffering.

(Several kisses.)
