CLAY

Well, you know, one can't scrape much together plodding along at low wages, Mother dear, but next year I'll have more.

SELLERS
(Advances.)

Clay, let's shake hands. You're a splendid young fellow, but you waste your time my boy, you waste your time.

CLAY

Waste my time?

SELLERS

[Now] how long has it taken you to make that money?

CLAY

Well—nearly a year.

SELLERS

[Oh my boy,] that'll never do—never in the world . I'll have to take you under my wing. If we get the [Columbia River appropriation] through, town lots in Napoleon will be worth ten thousand dollars a square foot, and there's then thousand lots—all corner ones. How does that strike you for a speculation?

CLAY

Where is Columbia River?

SELLERS

[It used to be] Goose Run.

CLAY

And Napoleon?

SELLERS

That's Stone Landing.

CLAY

And the appropriation?

SELLERS

Congress will pass it next year—sure .
