COL. SELBY
(Aside.)What the deuce is the matter with the girl now, I wonder? This is a somewhat new and interesting phase in her character.
[(To LAURA.)]
I hear you have been ill.
LAURA
I have been ill.
COL. SELBY
Nothing serious I hope?
LAURA
Nothing serious, a slight affection of the heart. I am fully recovered.
COL. SELBY
Were you concerned at my absence?
LAURA
I? Why should I be?
COL. SELBY
(Shrugging his shoulders.)I had a reason for not coming to say good bye.
LAURA
Had you? Oh, I remember now. You disappeared the same day my brother Clay came home. I remember, people spoke of it.
COL. SELBY
May I ask what people said?
LAURA
They said that your disappearance was timed with very clever judgment, very intelligent discretion.
COL. SELBY
That is to say, they intimated that I ran away from your brother?
LAURA
They intimated it, but it's absurd. A soldier, an officer, would certainly not run away from a young man, who has never been in military life at all.
