CLERK
(Rising.)

John Peterson, take the stand.

(PETERSON crosses quickly, takes witness box.
CLERK goes through the form of oath.)]

DISTRICT ATTORNEY *

Mr. Peterson, in your examination yesterday, on behalf of the prisoner, you testified that you had been a servant in the Dilworthy mansion for about a year. Is this true? Come [now], speak up!

PETERSON

Yes, sir.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

And you formed the opinion that the prisoner at the bar was insane. Is this also true, sir? Eh?

PETERSON

Yes, sir.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Have they paid you anything for this? Have you charged anything for this valuable assistance?

PETERSON

Charged anything?

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Charged anything? Don't repeat my question, but answer it.

PETERSON

No, sir. I haven't charged anything. It was my honest impression.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY
(Sneeringly.)

You've a very honest countenance, John—in the dark. Now, Mr. Peterson, throughout this whole affair, you've shown a very curious anxiety to befriend the prisoner. Is she anything to you?

PETERSON

She stood by my old Mother when she was poor and in distress and hadn't a friend in the world.
