DISTRICT ATTORNEY

But you started towards the reception room to announce them, didn't you? Eh?

PETERSON

Yes sir—but—I turned away—I did not go in.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Why didn't you go in, John? Eh?

PETERSON
(Hesitatingly.)

I— I—

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

You've got a sudden hitch in your tongue—but you looked in, didn't you?

PETERSON

N—No sir. I— I—

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

So I thought myself. Did you write to anybody that night?

PETERSON

I—I don't remember—no sir, I did not write to anybody.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Oh! You didn' t ? I thought maybe you did. Didn't you write to your mother? Eh?

PETERSON
(With a start. Aside.)

Oh, this is some lawyer's trick. She must have burned the letter I wrote her.

(Aloud.)

No sir, I didn't write to anyone!

DISTRICT ATTORNEY
(Takes a portfolio from table.)

Is this portfolio yours?
