[CLERK]

Order in the court, sit down sir!

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Colonel Sellers, upon your entrance to the Dilworthy mansion at the time of the homicide, didn't you hear a voice say, "I have killed the only man I ever loved?"

SELLERS

Yes, sir. I did, sir.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Whose voice was it?

SELLERS

It was Laura Hawkins' voice; but she didn't know what she was doing—

([DIST. ATTORNEY turns towards
JUDGE and SELLERS taps on
shoulder.] Turns to jury.)

Why Gentlemen [she was insane when she—

CLERK]

Order in the court! Order in the court!

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Now, Colonel, from the clear, coherent and decided manner of that voice, don't you believe she knew—

DUFFER.
(Interrupting.)

O, I protest, sir—

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

But we have a right to show—

DUFFER

The learned counsel, under the shallow pretense—

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

[Allow me your honor—]

(They both take up [law books
and confer with] JUDGE.)

SELLERS
(Turning to jury. Earnestly
& persuasively.)

Now Gentlemen of the Jury, I know you can't find it in your hearts to bring her in guilty. She never could have done it in her sound mind. Why she's and angel, yes she is. She may be a little too proud and frisky for a regular old fashioned bible angel, but she's an angel. If you knew her as I do, if you'd carried her in your arms as I have, I know you'd say, Go poor desolate mind. Go poor ruined heart.

(The Court has become still while the witness
is speaking. The JUDGE & COUNSEL
look on him with surprise at this point.)
