[Clerk]

Order in the court!

SELLERS

And if you do as I tell you, you'll do right!

[CLERK]

Order in the court!

JUDGE

The witness will confine his remarks to the answering of questions.

SELLERS

[Certainly your honor, certainly.] I'm not used to the forms of procedure of the courts in this [part of the] Country, but out west, sir, where the great American Eagle spreads its pinions over the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevadas—

JUDGE

There, there, sir, that will do .

SELLERS

Well, [you see your honor,] there didn't happen to be any question before the court at that moment, so I thought I'd take advantage of the lull in the proceedings to explain to the jury. Now if you will allow me, it won't take long. Now [gentlemen], my theory is this—

[CLERK

Attend to the court, attend to the court.]

SELLERS

[Takes one man and whispers in his ear, then shakes hands with him and turns to court)

] I've got one man there, anyway—

JUDGE

Proceed, Mr. Duffer.

DUFFER

That will do, Colonel Sellers, you may take your seat.

SELLERS
(Walks up to JUDGE.)

Judge, I mean no disrespect, but I don't think the jury have had it explained to them fully.

[(To jury.)

Now gentlemen,

(Whispers to another man, then
shakes hands with him.)]

JUDGE

[That will do.] Will you sit down sir?
