SELLERS

There's no necessity for it. Allow me to congratulate you.

(Shakes hands with DUFFER.)

JUDGE

Gentlemen of the Jury, you have heard the evidence and the arguments of counsel. If you find that the prisoner was insane at the time of the killing, your verdict will be not guilty, but if you find that she was sane, then let the evidence determine the character of your verdict. You will now retire.

(Exit JURY in charge of SHERIFF.)

[SELLERS

Judge, will you allow me to go in with them?

JUDGE

Sit down, sir.

SELLERS

If I could only get in there for five minutes, there would be a verdict of not guilty, or a fight.]

(SELLERS & the family go to LAURA.)

MRS. HAWKINS

O, my child, I cannot bear this awful suspense.

LAURA

Cheer up, Mother dear, let all be as God wills. I have committed a great crime, and I have repented, bitterly repented. I am ready to suffer.

MRS. HAWKINS

O, do not talk so, my heart will break.

SELLERS

{Keep a brave heart Nancy, keep a brave heart.]

(To LAURA.)

Tomorrow we'll go away to Missouri and forget all about this disagreeable business.

(Kisses her.)

There, cheer up, cheer up.

LAURA

O, Father, I have so shamed the name you gave me. You were always so kind to me, and I have repaid you by dishonoring you—you never can forgive me—I know you never can.
