HAWKINS

Forgive you, my darling? Forgive you? A father's heart stands wide open to his erring child, always. And O, when this terrible day is over, we will go away and find rest, rest and peace, my child.

LAURA

Clay, my faithful brother, my old playmate in childhood, let me feel the clasp of your hand.

(Takes his hand.)

It gives me strength—it lifts up my wavering courage, I can wait now, what ever may come.

(Enter JURY and SHERIFF. All take seats.)

JUDGE

Gentlemen of the Jury, look upon the prisoner. Prisoner, look upon the Jury.

(LAURA rises.)

Gentlemen of the Jury, have you agreed upon a verdict?

FOREMAN

We have.

JUDGE

What say you? Is the prisoner at the bar guilty, or not guilty?

FOREMAN
(After a pause.)

Not guilty!

[(SELLERS embracing FOREMAN and pulling
him over railing. MRS. HAWKINS embraces
LAURA. UNCLE DANIEL is in high glee.
Others shaking hands.)]
