The money from Colonel Sellers, however, kept rolling in; and on January 11, 1878, another milestone was reached. While in production at Sellers' original home, the PARK THEATRE in New York, Raymond gave its 1,000th performance.
From this point on, even though it still enjoyed great popularity, Raymond tried to be less dependent upon Sellers and tried to branch out into new roles. His great success as the Colonel, he would soon find out, was to be a hinderance to his being accepted in other roles, and in truth, his success would ultimately lead to the demise and disappearance of the play.
On January 14, 1878, only three days after his milestone performance as Sellers, Raymond opened a new play entitled Risks, or Insure Your Life. It was not the success Colonel Sellers was (Raymond would never match it), but it was a passable entertainment, and the engagements that year would be divided between Colonel Sellers and other plays, most notably, Risks. In the following years, Raymond made a solid living from Sellers and a string of modest successes including: For Congress, In Paradise, The Woman Hater, Risks, Toodles, and as "Icabod Crane" in Wolfert's Roost.
