Any Small Goodness
(Blue Sky Press)
by Tony Johnston

Reading Level: Ages 9-Up

This book receives a high recommendation because it sets an excellent example of how small but good deeds can unite a community, as seen from a child's point of view.

Told in first person, Arturo is a likeable and believable character as he tells of his Hispanic family's assimilation into the white community of Los Angeles. Trying to fit into an American school, he risks losing his identity, which we are introduced to through the cast of colorful family characters.

Each chapter features an incident with an "everyday" hero, often performing a simple good deed that might otherwise go unnoticed. These simple events, pulled together as a novel, make one aware of how important strong family values are as each child sets out to find his place in the world each day. The lessons could apply be it a child in L.A. or upstate New York.

I see this book having a great appeal to all children, especially boys as they relate to Turo and the challenges he faces, including exposure to gangs. There is also a great deal of humor as well as a good sampling of Spanish vocabulary, including a three-page glossary for those who want to explore this aspect further.

A small book with a mighty message told with humor and warmth and not at all preachy. It is a great read with universal appeal.
