A Corner of the Universe
(Scholastic)
by Ann M. Martin

Reading Level: Ages 9-12

I highly recommend A Corner of the Universe, the story of 12-year old Hattie's summer before sixth grade. Her parents run a boarding house in a small town where her wealthy grandparents are pillars of the community. When a 21-year old uncle, Adam, suffering from autism, comes to live with them, she learns valuable life lessons brought on by the impact mental illness has on both a family and their community.

Hattie discovers not just a new relative but a friend—unlike any friend she has ever had. As she tries to protect and love Adam, she defies many of her family's wishes and orders. The consequences are often bewildering and dangerous. It's a complex story of a young girl's love and maturity. Through this experience, she gains an insight into the complexity of adult relationships, family ties, and responsibility. Author Martin, best known as the author of the Baby-Sitters Club series, has written a beautiful story of sensitive issues.
