The House on
Falling Star Hill

(Scholastic/Chicken House)
by Michael Molloy

Reading level: ages 9-12

The author has created this story in the classic heroic fantasy style, set in the medieval world of Tallis.  This realm has all the ingredients of epic fantasy including various humanoid species, those that possess both good and evil mystical powers and a feudal system where the power of the throne has been usurped by evil forces.  The twist, however, is that the hero, young Tim Swift, is not of this world, but of earth.  His companions in the quest to restore peace and harmony to Tallis, Sarre, a young Chanter having an array of mystical powers, and Hunter, a mysterious knight on a quest of his own provide the remaining essential characters of good fantasy.  In some respects, Tim is similar to Frodo Baggins of the Lord of the Rings .  Both are ordinary people thrust into heroic roles.

Tim, expecting a quiet summer vacation at his grandparents in the small town of Enton, finds himself on a quest in this fantasy realm.  Tim is a shy youth whose only friend is his dog Josh.  His encounter with Sarre and Hunter lead him to the house on Falling Star hill and the starway where he finds himself transported to Tallis.

This normally peaceful world ruled by the High King, is now under the rein of terror of the ruthless and greedy Duke Galeth.  It is up to Tim, Sarre, and Hunter to dislodge the evil duke and restore peace and harmony to the kingdom.  Tim, along with Sarre and Hunter, set off on an action filled adventure that spans the lands of Tallis.  This trio face many obstacles requiring the special talents of each before the final confrontation with the evil duke. Each conflict challenging Tim's sense of duty, honor, and courage.  In the process he undergoes a transformation from the shy schoolboy to a confident and self-assured young man.

Michael Molloy has crafted an intriguing tale of fantasy and adventure.  The action and unsuspected twists as the story unfolds create an air of suspense that makes this book hard to put down.  I found his unique sense of story and his creative and surprising reactions to the many challenges fascinating and believe young readers will find this tale fascinating as well.
