Finding Grace(Delacorte Press) by Alyssa Brugman Reading Level: Young Adult Rachel is 18 years old and knows everything. "Well, not everything," she admits, but she "does know a great deal about a great many things." Throughout this story, we discover what truths about life Rachel does know. One thing she doesn't know is what she's going to do after high school graduation, but two events happen that very day that give her life a new and challenging direction. She is accepted into Uni-(what they call University in Australia) and she is offered a live-in-job near Uni as a caretaker for a lovely and young brain-injured lady named Grace. Not one who makes friends easily, Rachel accepts the position even though it will be time consuming and demanding. Although her mother, who she has an excellent relationship with, reminds her that it will not leave her much time for herself, Rachel thinks that will be the perfect excuse for not having an active social life. As she takes on these new challenges in a stately home and prestige neighborhood, she also encounters the people who were once a part of Grace's life - her needy and greedy sisters, her former lover, neighbors--both obnoxious and charming-- and a shoe-box full of memoirs once written by Grace. Through the letters she tries to put together the pieces of Grace's life prior to her injury, hoping it will show her a way to reach Grace, who neither speaks nor shows any signs of recognition of people. Meanwhile, Rachel's own life begins to bloom in unexpected ways with a first love and new friends. In her earnest quest to find Grace, Rachel also finds herself and her strengths. A lovely and interesting story. Vy Armour, Member SCBWI
