Harry Potter(Scholastic Press) by J. K. Rowling Reading Level: Ages 9-12 So what can one say about the most popular children's book series? How about: Terrific story! Imaginative! Vastly entertaining! J. K. Rowling is a master storyteller and consummate plotter. While each book is a jewel to be appreciated for its own beauty, the underlying plot keeps the readers anxious to see what happens in the next book. It is not a series that dwells on philosophy, emotions, or deep social commentary. This is a story of good Vs evil, appearance Vs reality, and coming of age. Each volume is filled with mystery and thrills, and the unifying plot ties the volumes together as well as any book series written, children's or adult. I look forward to the seventh and final volume with both great anticipation and sadness, for it will reveal Harry's ultimate fate and be the end of a world I'll hate to leave. NOTICE: Much has been made of Harry Potter's wizardry themes but, unless you took offense at "The Wizard of Oz" or "Bewitched," you will find nothing offensive in these books. Unlike the "His Dark Materials Trilogy," (see review) the Harry Potter books don't aim to challenge your beliefs, only to entertain. In fact, this is an ideal series to read with your child and discuss the role of imagination in daily life and the differences between reality and fantasy.
