Indigo(Scholastic Press) by Alice Hoffman Reading Level: 9-12 I would classify this "modern day fairy tale" as a good read, but for a limited and specific audience of children, as the reader must be willing to accept that boys with web feet, hailing from the ocean, can have a relevant message for today's teen. The book jacket says Hoffman blends reality with wonder, which I think is an accurate description of her beautiful lyrical prose. Reality comes in the form of the main character, 13-year old Martha, who is very plausible as she struggles with the loss of her mother. It is also a story of the healing effects of friendship. It would be the ideal gift book for a child who has suffered a loss, as it promises hope. It is also beautifully packaged as a hardcover with "indigo" illustrations to introduce each chapter. I think if a child likes this book, it is one they will want to keep. Vy Armour, Member SCBWI
