The Last Girls of Pompeii
(Viking Juvenile)
by Kathryn Lasky

Reading Level: Ages 9-12

Julia is the daughter of a wealthy family and Sura, kidnapped from her home in Thrace when she was five years old, is her slave. Although they follow the custom of mistress and slave, the girls have become more like sisters.

In the days preceding the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, the Julia's family is preparing for the marriage of her older sister. Julia is bored with all the soothsayers and festivities, partly because she is only twelve years old but mainly because she has a deformed arm and is therefore prevented from marrying.

In roundabout ways, the girls learn that Sura is to be sold as a concubine to a disgusting older man and Julia is to be relegated to a life in the Temple of Damia. When the volcano erupts during the wedding ceremonies, the girls find a way to make some necessary changes.

The Last Girls of Pompeii depicts life in the Roman Empire in a fast-moving novel with strong characters and story. I am especially impressed with Kathryn Lasky’s research and her ability to immerse the readers in time and place.
